When going to the doctor for whatever reason, we mostly get the same information and advice: get enough sleep, eat a healthy diet, exercise regularly, and avoid risky behaviors.
Well, a Managed Service Provider (MSP) isn’t far from that and provides proactive management and maintenance to an organization’s IT systems to prevent problems from arising. MSPs provide advice on how to keep data and computer systems safe and secure, such as implementing strong passwords, updating software, and being cautious about clicking on links in emails or visiting suspicious websites.
Just as a primary care doctor serves as the first point of contact for medical issues, an MSP serves as the first point of contact for IT issues, handling them or directing them to the appropriate experts as needed. Think about a routine check with your physician where he or she performs standard routine tests to check on your overall health. MSPs monitor networks and systems in search of potential security threats. Both aim for the same thing; to keep things running smoothly.
Both your MSP and your doctors should be trusted confidants. They are responsible for the protection and confidentiality of handling your sensitive data and private information. Both have a legal obligation to comply with strict regulations.
But having an MSP or going to the doctor isn’t just going to do the trick (isn’t enough). You may get all relevant recommendations and have all the information needed, but ultimately it is your responsibility to follow those recommendations and take the necessary precautions to keep overall health. Sure, things might still happen even after being covered. But minimizing the risks and having the right tools can help to catch the problem on time and act on the matter. And it surely gives you a significant advantage over the ones who were caught off guard. Actions such as training your employees on security awareness, creating policies and procedures for data protection, and having a disaster recovery plan in place. You wouldn’t sue your doctor if you are the one who had one too many slices of pizza!
In summary, yes, you should think of your MSP as your trusted doctor. Get your regular exercise and your IT health check in order. Treat your data as your temple.
